Golf: Price takes 2-stroke lead in Toshiba Classic

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 06:55 PM PST

NEWPORT BEACH, California (AP) - Nick Price followed his record-tying first round with a 3-under 68 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead in the Toshiba Classic on the Champions Tour.

The 54-year-old Zimbabwean had four birdies and a bogey a day after matching the Champions Tour record with a career-best 11-under 60. Seeking his fourth victory on the 50-and-over tour, Price has a 14-under 128 total.

"I think after a good round you tend to play a little cautiously," said Price, a three-time major champion with 18 PGA Tour victories. "I felt like I played two shots better than I did."

Able to relax after finally hearing from his wife in Tokyo, Japanese star Joe Ozaki had seven birdies - four from 20 feet or longer - to shoot a 64 and move up from 15th place to third at 10-under 132.

Ozaki played the first round on Friday despite not having heard from his wife, Yoshie, or his two sons, following the earthquake in northern Japan. She finally called him Friday night and assured him that she was fine.

"I wasn't really nervous," Ozaki said through an interpreter. "I knew if something happened, somebody would call."

Mark Wiebe was in second at 12-under 130 after shooting his second straight 65. "Nick is a great player and I'm going to have to do some magic," said Wiebe, a two-time winner on the Champions Tour. "We'll have to see what I have in my bag of tricks."

Mark O'Meara (67) was level with Ozaki at 10 under, and defending champion Fred Couples (67) was at 9 under, along with Michael Allen (64) and Tom Pernice Jr. (65).

Price, who was five strokes ahead after the first round, played 28 holes without a bogey before dropping a stroke on the par-4 11th. He had a chance to get it back on the next hole, but missed a short putt.

"I felt like I put a good stroke on it," Price said. "It's hard to miss the hole from a foot and a half. I think it had to have hit something."

Gil Morgan had a 64, matching his age, to join Robert Thompson (66), Jeff Sluman (66) and Olin Browne (66) at 8 under. Germany's Bernard Langer, tied for second after an opening 65, had a 73 to drop into 34th at 4 under.

Ian Baker-Finch struggled again in his Champions Tour debut, following an opening 74 with a 79.

Tennis: Murray upset by Young at Indian Wells

Posted: 12 Mar 2011 06:55 PM PST

INDIAN WELLS, California (AP) - Andy Murray was stunned by qualifier Donald Young in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, losing 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Murray, who was playing for the first time in a month, has lost his past seven sets. The slump began with 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 loss to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final and continued with a 6-4, 6-1 loss to Marcos Baghdatis in Rotterdam, Holland, in early February.

Against Young, an American qualifier ranked 143rd in the world, Murray wasted early service breaks in both sets and lost his serve four times.

"I started the match well and then when it got close to the end of the first set I just didn't do anything particularly well," the fifth-ranked Scot said. "I didn't do anything to really lift myself. He started playing better. I didn't find my way back into the match."

Young, a former junior champion who has struggled on the ATP Tour, began the week with a 1-3 match record for the year.

Former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina continued his comeback from a year lost to wrist surgery by ousting defending champion Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

Del Potro, No. 4 in the world before his injury, has moved from No. 484 to No. 90 in the past three weeks and is 15-4 on the season.

In other upsets, sixth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer was beaten by Ivo Carlovic of Croatia, 7-6 (3), 6-3, and Marcos Baghdatis, the 19th seed from Cyprus, lost to Somdev Devvarman of India, 7-5, 6-0.

On the women's side of the tournament, Dinara Safina of Russia beat two-time tournament champion Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 7-6 (2), 6-4. It marked the first time the former world No. 1 has won back-to-back matches since late September.

Safina next plays No. 4 Samantha Stosur of Australia, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over qualifier Laura Pous-Tio of Spain.

In other matches, Urszula Radwanska of Poland beat No. 34 Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, and Czech qualifier Lucie Hradecka defeated No. 27 Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
