Azzuddin Ahmad

Kok Chi bayang hasrat berundur

Kok Chi bayang hasrat berundur

Oleh Norzie Mohd. Khasbi
norzie.khasbi@utusan.com.my

Webber likely to see out F1 career at Red Bull

ISTANBUL, May 6 — Mark Webber indicated yesterday that he would see out his Formula One career at Red Bull and revealed how close he came to quitting the sport a few years ago.

The 34-year-old Australian, whose contract with the world champions expires at the end of the year, told reporters at the Turkish Grand Prix that he had three options for 2012 and the choice would be his.

"Stay here, stop or drive somewhere else — which is probably unlikely," he said.

"It's obviously down a lot to how I feel about things and we'll see how we feel later in the year," he added.

"I could have stopped two, three years ago but I didn't, I kept going. The results have been good in the last few years and are still being good now."

While Webber joined Red Bull in 2007, finishing 12th and 11th overall in his first two years with the team, the Australian was clearly referring to his difficult years at Williams before then in 2005 and 2006.

"It's old ground isn't it?" he said when pressed on the subject. "We know the window in my career where I was thinking about it (stopping). It didn't happen, I came to Red Bull and (we've) done some great things together.

"There's still a lot of big boxes to tick hopefully and do some great things."

Webber won four races last season and was a title contender, if not favourite, going into the final race in Abu Dhabi won by German team mate Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel won the race and the title, becoming the youngest ever champion at 23 years old, and has gone from strength to strength.

The youngster has been on pole position for all three races this season and won two of them, finishing second in the other in China.

Webber's third place in China was his first podium finish since Brazil last November and the rise of Vettel has led to speculation that the Australian could look elsewhere next year or retire.

He said he was keeping things open, and the team were happy with that.

"We haven't had too many discussions yet but obviously in the next few months things will start... it's not really a big subject," said Webber.

"We realise how many good things we've done together and there's a good chance of doing some very good things again together in future. Whether it ends this year or I go again next year, it doesn't depend on results.

"(The) results will be fine. It depends on how I feel," said the man who won in Monaco and at Silverstone last year.

"There's a lot of things that have happened in the last few years that have been big highlights for me and sensational moments so I hope I can add to those in the next few years and go from there."

Webber had not won a race before he joined Red Bull, a third place in Monaco in 2005 being his best previous result, and he was 10th and 14th overall in an uncompetitive car with former champions Williams.

"I just didn't enjoy my time before I came here," he recalled.

"At Williams it was a tough fight for me. At that point I had to restart my career in a way and it worked out very well.

"So obviously I made the right decision there and since then I've taken it step by step which has been the right way for my mentality towards the job and probably also suits Red Bull quite well." — Reuters

Andy Murray crashes out of Madrid Open

MADRID, May 6 — World number four Andy Murray crashed out of the Madrid Open when he was beaten 6-4 6-2 by unseeded Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in the third round yesterday.

Murray, who is returning from an elbow injury that prevented him playing at last month's Barcelona Open, had his serve broken once in the first set and twice in the second by the stylish left-hander in the pair's first meeting.

Bellucci, ranked 36, saved all three break points he faced on the clay at the Magic Box arena and sealed victory on his first match point when Murray netted a backhand.

Murray, who will now head to Italy for next week's Rome Masters, was not too disheartened with the defeat and said he had to be realistic about his chances in Madrid after his injury layoff.

"I've got to look more at the week as a whole," the 23-year-old Scot told a news conference.

"I was coming back from an injury that wasn't serious but an elbow injury isn't easy for tennis players.

"I'm happy that physically I progressed, I was hitting the ball decent, I think I can definitely get better.

"You just need to be quite cautious and not do too much too soon because then you take a step back, but I think I've judged it pretty well.

"I need to get my tennis back because that's the most important thing going into Rome and the French Open." — Reuters

Goerges upsets Wozniacki in three sets at Madrid Open

Posted: 05 May 2011 06:17 AM PDT

MADRID (AP) - Julia Goerges upset Caroline Wozniacki for the second straight tournament Thursday, ousting the top-ranked Dane 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in the third round of the Madrid Open.

The 27th-ranked German broke Wozniacki in the eighth game of the deciding set to lead 5-3 before serving out the match.

Goerges rallied from 3-0 down to take the first set after breaking twice. But she lost that momentum as Wozniacki leveled the match with two breaks of her own in the second set.

"The second set she started to be more aggressive and I started to get tired, so I said to myself keep yourself together for the third set and try to fight for every point," said Goerges, who beat Wozniacki in the Porsche Grand Prix final in Stuttgart, Germany, on April 24.

While Goerges hit 38 unforced errors to Wozniacki's 21, she also managed 36 winners to her opponent's 11 on Manolo Santana court.

"I beat her twice and twice in two weeks so I'm pretty proud of myself," Goerges said after taking the two-hour plus match.

Goerges plays either fifth-seeded Sam Stosur or Anastasia Pavyluchenkova in the last eight.

Later, top-ranked men's player Rafael Nadal faces Juan Martin Del Potro while Novak Djokovic looks to maintain his perfect start to the season against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez with a 29th straight victory.

The last player to start 29-0 was Ivan Lendl in 1986.

Also, Roger Federer takes on Xavier Malisse while Andy Murray comes up against Brazilian player Thomaz Bellucci with the top-four players all vying for a spot in the quarterfinals.

A decade after his US debut Pacquiao a sensation

Posted: 04 May 2011 07:49 PM PDT

LAS VEGAS (AP) - It was 10 years ago this summer and Oscar De La Hoya was the big attraction, as he often was on Saturday nights in this gambling town.

Many of the high-rollers who came to watch De La Hoya fight Javier Castillejo hadn't even made their way to their $1,000 ringside seats at the MGM Grand hotel when a 121-pounder from the Philippines made his U.S. debut.

Manny Pacquiao had taken the fight on two weeks' notice. His chances of beating rising star Lehlohonolo Ledwaba were considered so slim that oddsmakers refused to even put a line up on it.

Pacquiao would give Ledwaba such a beating that the fight didn't last six rounds. Then he was gone, leaving the arena like the other undercard fighters to clear the way for the main event.

Those who watched that night saw promise, sure. But no one in the arena would have believed what was to come.

A decade later, Pacquiao is the star, fighting Saturday night in the same ring where he had his coming out party. He'll make a minimum of $20 million to take on Shane Mosley in a bout that should only further cement his place among the great fighters of his time.

And he'll do it wearing yellow gloves, because there are fights that are bigger than those taking place in the ring.

"All my life I've had to fight. As a child, I had to fight just to eat," Pacquiao said. "The biggest fight in my life is not in boxing. The biggest fight in my life is how to end poverty in my country."

The yellow gloves to promote unity against poverty aren't just a symbolic gesture. Neither was getting elected to congress in the Philippines.

Pacquiao is celebrated like no other Filipino athlete. But his legacy may one day be more important for what he does outside the ring.

He hands out money to strangers for the asking. He bought land recently to build subsidized housing for the homeless. And he went directly to Philippine president Benigno Aquino III to ask for $5 million for a badly needed hospital in his Sarangani Province.

He got it, because no one other than Floyd Mayweather Jr. has ever said no to Manny Pacquiao.

"I've said it many times," promoter Bob Arum said. "The Philippines has a social safety net and they call it Manny Pacquiao."

Boxing, of course, is Pacquiao's day job, and it's one he's excelled at in recent years. He gave De La Hoya such a beating a few years back that he sent him into retirement, and he's put on a string of sensational performances against some of the biggest names around.

The only name missing is Mayweather, though Pacquiao seems tired of the topic. Mayweather hasn't fought in a year and shows little interest of getting in the ring with Pacquiao in what could be boxing's richest fight ever.

"I'm the kind of person who doesn't want to talk about someone behind his back," Pacquiao said. "He did his best in boxing.

He contributed to the history of boxing.

Let's talk about the fight on Saturday."

The problem is, you can't talk about Saturday's fight without talking about Mayweather. Part of the reason for that is that Mayweather dominated Mosley in winning a decision last May and Pacquiao's performance against the same foe will be used as a measurement for who would hold the upper hand should the two eventually meet.

Assuming they ever meet, that is.

Mayweather has legal issues and he also seems to have issues with the fact there's a fighter out there would have a legitimate chance of handing him his first professional defeat.

"If he (Mayweather) doesn't participate in an event pretty soon he's going to become totally irrelevant," Arum said.

Right now, though, Pacquiao is just thinking about Mosley, who may give him a better fight than most boxing fans expect.

Yes, he's 39 in a young man's sport and, yes, he looked bad in his last two fights.

But Mosley still has the speed to match up with Pacquiao and he's never been knocked out in his career.

Pacquiao warned at Wednesday's final prefight press conference that Mosley is dangerous. But he didn't seem especially fearful as the two boxers posed chin-to-chin for photographers and Pacquiao tried unsuccessfully to stop from bursting out laughing.

When they finished, Pacquiao walked over to the edge of the stage in the showroom at the MGM, leaned over and shook hands with Mosley's father, Jack, and several other friends and family members. In his suit he looked more politician than fighter, someone pressing the flesh for their votes rather than preparing to beat up on their guy.

He's done remarkable things as a fighter since making his debut here a decade ago, made more money than he ever thought imaginable. The best thing about Pacquiao, though, may be how he's grown in stature as a man.

Napoli Tak Akan Lepas Hamsik

Posted: 05 May 2011 12:09 PM PDT

Posted: 05 May 2011 11:07 AM PDT

Masa depan Raul bersama The Royal Blues menjadi pertanyaan banyak pihak.

"Kami tahu memiliki tugas berat, tapi tim selalu mencoba bermain sepakbola," pungkasnya, sebagaimana dilansir Goal, Jumat (6/5/2011).

Dekati Gelar Beruntun

Ganda campuran Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir mendekati gelar kedua beruntun setelah mencapai perempat final Malaysia Terbuka Grand Prix Gold, Kamis.

(F005/I015/K004)

Goerges Jungkalkan Lagi Wozniacki

Posted: 05 May 2011 07:15 AM PDT

(OKS/I015/K004)

'Guardiola Tak Mungkin Menolak Inter'

'Guardiola Tak Mungkin Menolak Inter'
Mohammad Resha Pratama - detiksport

"Saya cukup tahu banyak Guardiola.

Mohammad Resha Pratama - detiksport

The Bavarians malah bersikap santai saja karena mereka baru memperpanjang kontrak Hans Jorg Butt.

Posted: 05 May 2011 05:57 PM PDT

(LS)

Ferguson Isyaratkan Fletcher Lawan Barca

Posted: 05 May 2011 05:55 PM PDT

(SKY)

Kido/Hendra Harus Terima Kenyataan Pahit

Posted: 05 May 2011 03:38 PM PDT

Tommy gagal jegal Chong Wei, Febe tersingkir

IT was business as usual for Lee Chong Wei as he eased into the third round of the Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold while Hafiz Hashim also registered one of his better starts in recent times in Alor Star yesterday.

Chong Wei blew away Robin Gonansa of Singapore with a 21-7, 21-16 win in the first round and defeated Takuma Ueda of Japan 21-8, 21-12 in the second round later in the day.

He will next meet Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto, who beat Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand 21-12, 21-9, in the third round today.

Hafiz defeated Dionisius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia 21-14, 21-17 in the first round and then overcame Thailand's Pakkawat Vilailak 21-18, 21-12 to secure a third round meeting with third seed Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam.

Liew Daren benifited from playing two local players as he edged Zulfadli Zulkifli 10-21, 21-17, 21-11 and Syawal Ismail 21-12, 21-21 to earn a place in the third round where he will take on Lee Hyun Il of South Korea.

Former back-up player Beryno Wong was the surprise package as he beat Tam Chun Hei of Hong Kong 18-21, 21-14, 21-13 and has a realistic chance of reaching the quarter-finals as he will play Brice Leverdez of France today.

Veteran Wong Choong Hann, after reaching the semi-final of the Swiss Open in March and the Australia Open final last month, was a pale shadow of himself and was beaten 21-15, 21-15 by India's Anup Sridhar in the first round on a day where 22 Malaysians crashed out in the men's singles.

Chong Wei said he is completely focused on this event as it is the first tournament to offer Olympic qualifying points.

"This is the first qualifying tournament for the Olympics and I am looking forward to it. It is a little tougher compared to the India Open last week as three China shuttlers are competing and I will give my best here," said Chong Wei.

"I must also make some adjustments to my programme so that I can peak at the right time for the World Championships in August.

"I normally do well in the first half of the season before hitting a brick wall between June and September. I normally peak again at the end of the year and this is not ideal for me as the World Championships and Olympics are between August and September."

Chong Wei is looking to fix the problem by playing in lesser tournaments until the London World Championships (Aug 8-14) and also early next year to be well prepared for next year's Olympics on July 27-Aug 12.

In the men's doubles, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong avoided a potential pitfall after beating Japan's Yoshiteru Hirobe-Kenta Kazuno with a 21-18, 21-13.

They will meet former world junior champions Ow Yao Han-Chooi Kah Ming, who upset Thailand No 1 Sudket Prapakamol-Songphon Anugritayawon 21-18, 23-21, Kien Keat vowed not to underestimate the young pair who beat them in the Kuala Lumpur Open last month.

"Many probaly would have expected us to struggle against the Japanese pair as we lost to them in the India Open and we are quite surprised to achieve an easy win. We did some analysis playing against Japanese pairs after returning from India and it helped," said Kien Keat.

"We lost to Yao Han-Kah Ming in the KL Open but we will never play in that manner again with any pair after this."

In the women's doubles, Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui came from a game down to beat Hong Kong's Poon Lok Yan-Tse Ying Suet 18-21, 23-21, 21-15 and play China's Luo Ying-Luo Yu today.

Malaysia lost 4-2 to Pakistan in a friendly match on Tuesday. Malaysia play Britain in the Azlan Shah Cup today. — Picture by L. Manimaran

AS hosts since 1983, Malaysia have only played in the final of the Azlan Shah Cup on three occasions -- only to settle for second place.

And an appearance in the title match this year is possible when the tournament begins in Ipoh today as almost all teams will be parading their junior players while Malaysia still have their Asian Games squad intact.

The hosts open against Britain today, and Tai Beng Hai's boys will be in for a hard time against the Olympic hosts.

"We have not played Britain for a long time but I expect it to be a tough match as they are preparing for the Olympics," said the national coach yesterday.

"A winning start is what we are looking for as the MHF has set a target of a top-four finish in Ipoh." Britain coach Jason Lee said: "We would not normally be able to attend a high-calibre international tournament as Britain this early in an Olympic cycle, so competing in the Azlan Shah is a good opportunity.

"The heat and humidity will be a true test of the team's fighting spirit, something we will need in 2012. It will be an interesting match against Malaysia tomorrow (today)."

The last time Malaysia played Britain was in the 2007 Kuala Lumpur Champions Trophy where the hosts lost 3-2.

Overall, Malaysia have played 20 times with Britain and lost on 12 occasions, drew six and only won twice. The first win was in 1991 in Cardiff where K. Embaraj's penalty corner goal was enough, while the second win was in the 1996 Azlan Shah Cup where Malaysia won 3-2.

In previous Azlan Shah Cup editions, the national team finished second in 1985, 2007 and 2009, while last year they finished fourth.

The fact that Malaysia are ranked World No 15 while the rest are many rungs above, should not be brought into the picture as the national players prepare to play in the Olympics for the first time since Sydney 2000.

World No 1 Australia, Britain (fourth) South Korea (sixth), New Zealand (seven), Pakistan (eight) and India (ninth) are world class teams who will undoubtedly make their presence felt in Ipoh.

India and Pakistan have always been draw cards in the tournament, and with the latter winning the Asian Games gold medal over Malaysia, expectations will be high on the men in green.

However, both the Asian leaders have sent diluted sides to the tournament so it will be interesting to see how well their reserves bench has progressed.

Australia won the World Cup, Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games gold and only lost one match in the process last year.

So, Beng Hai and his charges will not be living a pipe dream if they target a berth in the final as they prepare to break into the Olympics bracket.
