South Africa bats 1st in 3rd ODI vs. India

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP): South Africa gave batsman Faf du Plessis his international debut as the Proteas won the toss and elected to bat in the third ODI against India at Newlands on Tuesday.

Du Plessis, a batting allrounder, was selected in place of David Miller following India's one-run win in Johannesburg on Saturday to level the five-match series 1-1.

India also made one change following its dramatic victory at the Wanderers, recalling allrounder Yusuf Pathan to its team for the Cape Town match in place of Sachin Tendulkar, who returned home on Sunday with a right hamstring strain.

Rohit Sharma and Murali Vijay - who both missed out of making India's World Cup squad - will open the batting in the absence of Tendulkar and injured pair Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.

Proteas captain Graeme Smith leads his country for the final time in an ODI at his home ground. Smith, who has captained the team for a South African record 140 one-day internationals, will step down from the ODI role after the World Cup.

South Africa will announce its final 15-man World Cup squad on Wednesday, ahead of the final two matches of the series - in Port Elizabeth and Centurion.

India announced its World Cup squad Monday, with Sharma and Vijay the only men in Tuesday's team in Cape Town to miss out on the World Cup.

The series is the last for both countries ahead of next month's limited-overs showpiece tournament, which is co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Easy win for Clijsters

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 02:03 AM PST

MELBOURNE: U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters made short work of a fellow former No. 1 player, beating Dinara Safina 6-0, 6-0 in a first-round match at the Australian Open.

Clijsters never allowed the 2009 Australian Open finalist to get into the match, placing pinpoint forehands to all areas of the court. When Safina did have an opportunity to return, her many unforced errors gave away the point to Clijsters.

Safina's best chance of winning a game came in the last game, but her attempted winner was buried deep into the middle of the net. Two points later, Clijsters completed the rout when Safina made yet another unforced error. - AP
