WORLD No 1 Lee Chong Wei remained on course to retain the All England men's singles title after sweeping aside Thailand's Boonsak Bonsana 21-15, 21-7 in the quarter-finals in Birmingham on Friday.

Joining him in the semi-finals were former champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who exacted revenge over their Guangzhou Asian Games defeat to Indonesia's Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan with a 21-19, 23-25, 21-11 victory in the men's doubles.

Chong Wei, the top seed, impressed with his super-quick movement, which earned him easy points over the hapless Boonsak.

He played China's fifth seed Chen Long, who upset Denmark's Peter Gade Christensen 21-12, 21-12, in a late semi-final yesterday.

Although Chong Wei, who has won two titles this year, won in an impressive manner over Boonsak, he was not happy with his performance.

"I didn't play all that well," Chong Wei told www.allenglandbadminton.com on Friday.

Lin Dan, who will become the first in the open era to win five titles if he triumphs in Birmingham, swept aside Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh in straight games.

He played unseeded German Marc Zwiebler in the other semi-final late yesterday.

Zwiebler continued his surprise run in the tournament by edging Japan's Kazushi Yamada 21-18, 17-21, 21-15 on Friday.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong were on their way to a straight-game victory but failed to do so despite holding match point in the second game.

But the fifth seeds came back strongly in the third to claim a much-deserved win.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong played China's world champions Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng (Chn) in a late semi-final match.

Compatriots Zakry Latif-Hoon Thien How's gallant run came to an end in the quarter-finals when the unseeded pair lost 21-19, 21-18 to Denmark's top seeds Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen, who played China's Chai Biao-Guo Zhendong yesterday.

SELANGOR pushed Negri Sembilan coach Wan Jamak Wan Hassan closer to the sack as leaders Kelantan fell to their first defeat of the season in Super League action yesterday.

Negri failed to capitalise on an early goal and a hatful of chances in the first half as Selangor ran out 2-1 winners in Paroi and inflicted a fourth defeat in five league games on Negri.

Pahang stunned leaders Kelantan 2-0 at the Darul Makmur Stadium in Kuantan when Surendran Ravindran headed in Azamuddin Akil's cross in the 43rd minute before Faizol Hussain added the second in the last minute.

Perak failed to take advantage of Kelantan's defeat when they could only draw 0-0 with T-Team in Kuala Terengganu although they closed the gap to one point.

That allowed Felda United to move into second place after a 2-0 win over Perlis in Kangar while Selangor rose to third with both teams level on 14 points with Kelantan.

Negri showed their intent early on with Hairuddin Omar going close when he rose high to head Shahurain Abu Samah's cross which went just wide of the far post in the eighth minute.

Selangor could hardly get out of their own half when disaster struck after Iqbal Suhaimi ran off his line and felled S. Kunanlan with a wild tackle to concede a penalty.

Shahurain easily sent Iqbal the wrong way in the 11th minute to put Negri ahead.

Fadzli Saari thought he had equalised for Selangor in the 26th minute when he poked in Hardi Jaafar's cross only to be called offside.

Kunanlan almost made it 2-0 seconds before the break when his cross-cum-shot had Iqbal beaten only to strike the post.

Selangor emerged after the break with renewed vigour and were level in the 61st minute when Amri dinked the ball past Farizal with the outside of his right foot after Safiq Rahim's defence-splitting pass.

Safiq Rahim punished Negri further when he rose above the strapping G. Mahathevan to direct a powerful header into the bottom corner in the 79th minute.

Radhi Mat Din celebrated his first match in charge of Kedah with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Terengganu at the Darul Aman Stadium in Alor Star.

After Reeshafiq Alwi gave Terengganu the lead in the 29th minute, Kedah turned the game around in the second half thanks to strikes by Khyril Muhymeen Zambri (63rd) and Firdaus Faudzi (67th).

Heavy rain in Kota Kinabalu forced the postponement of Sabah's home tie against Young Tigers A after the Likas Stadium pitch became water-logged.
