Shakhtar can stun Barca, says Luiz Adriano

DONETSK: Striker Luiz Adriano still believes Shakhtar Donetsk can make the Champions League semifinals despite their 5-1 first-leg defeat to Barcelona at Nou Camp.

Shakhtar go into the second leg at Donbass Arena tomorrow (2.45am) needing something special to prevent 2006 and 2009 champions Barca from going though.

Only three clubs before have managed to overturn a four-goal first-leg deficit in Uefa competition.

Luiz Adriano, however, who hit the post in the first-leg and also spurned an early one-on-one with goalkeeper Victor Valdes as Shakhtar caused their hosts a number of problems going forward, is not giving the tie up for lost just yet.

On Shakhtar's objective tomorrow, the Brazilian said on sport.es: "Without doubt it's to get to the semifinals, it can't be anything else.

"If it's not like that, why are we going out to play? Every game has it's own story and if Barca beat us 5-1 at their home, we can also win here 5-1, or by 4-0.

"There are still 90 minutes left and the team are convinced we can still dream about getting through. We want to continue making history."

On his side's first-leg performance, Luiz Adriano, who turned 24 today, said: "The truth is that we didn't have a bad game, but we didn't make the most of the many chances we had.

"I myself could have scored at least two goals but had no luck, while in contrast Barca were more effective."

Terry insists Chelsea can get result at Old Trafford

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011 12:55:00

LONDON: Chelsea captain John Terry appears in bullish mood ahead of his side's crucial Champions League second-leg quarterfinal clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford tomorrow (2.45am).

Writing in his "Captain's Notes" section of the Chelsea's matchday programme ahead of last Saturday's 1-0 victory at home to Wigan Athletic, Terry found reason to be optimistic about his sides chances of progressing through to the final four of the elite European competition.

"After the first-leg, it's clear in our minds what we need to do. We know we're capable of going and winning at Old Trafford — we did it last year when the title race was hinging on the result of that game. We know we must show more than we did in the first-leg but we're looking forward to that challenge," he wrote.

Terry also expressed his determination for the remainder of Chelsea's Premier League campaign.

"We are still giving this league campaign everything we have got. We will never stop going – we want to pick up as many points as possible to put ourselves in the best position we can come the end of the season."

Team manager Carlo Ancelotti was equally upbeat about his side's Champions League prospects.

"After Wednesday's result (the 1-0 defeat in the first-leg at Stamford Bridge), we know it will not be easy for us. It was disappointing to concede a goal the way we did and we did not take the chances that we made for ourselves," wrote the Italian.

"But I do not think we deserved to lose and now we have to look ahead and put the disappointing aspects of the first game behind us.

"It would be a difficult game whatever the score had been in the first-leg here. We have confidence in ourselves and know that we are capable of winning in any stadium and any situation — we have this belief. Last year we needed to win at Old Trafford to go to the top of the league and become champions and we won 2-1.

"With the same score again we would progress on Tuesday (tomorrow), so we have confidence."
