Pedrosa wins first Portuguese GP

Posted: 01 May 2011 06:32 AM PDT

ESTORIL, Portugal (AP): Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa passed world champion Jorge Lorenzo with four laps to go to win his first Moto GP Portuguese Grand Prix on Sunday.

Pedrosa withstood the pain from his recent shoulder surgery to pass his countryman on the inside and held on to get his first win of the season on the 4.182-kilometer (2.599-mile) Estoril circuit.

Lorenzo started in pole position, but could not shake Pedrosa as he failed to win the race for the fourth straight time.

Italian rider Marco Simoncelli was second off the start line, but crashed on the first lap and could not continue.

Pedrosa's Honda teammate Casey Stoner finished third while five-time winner Valentino Rossi came in fifth.
