SQUASH players Ng Eain Yow and Rachel Arnold were among 18 recipients of CIMB Foundation's sports scholarship, a scheme aimed at talented juniors who compete in sport development programmes funded by the foundation.

Six players each from the sport of golf, football and squash became the first batch of reci1pients yesterday under the Sports Scholarship Scheme, which carries a value of RM10,000 for each scholarship.

The close partnership between CIMB Foundation and the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia is already bearing fruit after Eain Yow won the British Junior Open Under-13 boys' title in January while Andrea Lee was runner-up in the girls' Under-13 event.

Rachel Arnold, 15, is striving to be the top national squash junior in the country having reached the Asian Junior Championship Under-15 semi-finals last year and winning a leg of the CIMB National Junior Circuit Under-17 event this year.

The younger sister of national No 3 Delia said the award of the scholarship will motivate her to excel at her next tournament, the Milo All Stars Junior Chamoionship starting on May 30.

"I'm really proud to have been picked for this scholarship. I've worked hard in training and I think if I train harder I can keep this award," said Rachel after the scholarship presentation in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

"I'm injured now after twisting my ankle in training but I should be back on court soon to start training for the Milo All Stars where I hope to at least finish in the top four so that I can make the team for the World Junior Championships."

For YFA-Bintang Muda football academy technical director N. Radhakrishnan, the award for six of his boys comes just in time ahead of the Under-12 team's Sultan Ahmad Shah Cup final against PKNS in Cheras on Sunday.

"We made the final for the first time this year and I think CIMB are very happy with us. The final is a big occasion for us especially given our rivalry with PKNS," said Radhakrishnan.

CIMB Foundation chief executive Datuk Shukri Hussin said each recipient will be evaluated after a year to determine if they should have their scholarship extended.

"The tenure is for one year only and there is no automatic renewal. This creates competition and a performance-based environment to maintain their edge.

"This scholarship is the first step on the road to success and we will review each scholar after the one-year had lapsed," said Shukri in his speech.

The recipients -- Squash: Ng Eain Yow, Andrea Lee, Fareez Izwan Mokhtar, S. Sivasangari, Rachel Arnold, Zoey Foo.

Golf: Aaerishna Shahsty Balakrishna, Ervin Chang, Loy Hee Ying, Paul San, Nuralissa Abdullah, Siti Zulaika Shaari.

Football: M. Varadhan, Mohd Nor Ikhwan, Aidil Haziq Daman Huri, Fawzal Abdul Muthalib, Hadin Azman, Muhammad Aiman.

YOUNG Tigers A rallied from conceding an early goal to run out 3-1 winners over nine-man T-Team in a Super League match at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium yesterday.

Fandi Othman and Syahrul Azwari Ibrahim, with a brace, scored in the second half to lift the Tigers to sixth in the table on 26 points as T-Team self-destructed in spectacular fashion.

T-Team coach Yunus Alif, who is on a three-game probation to save his job as side flounders in ninth place, was at first relieved to see his captain Rosdi Talib head in Zairo Anuar Zailani's corner for an eighth-minute lead.

Playing in the evening without defender Subri Sulong and striker Haris Safwan Kamal, T-Team appeared to have the measure of the Tigers in the opening 20 minutes as they looked organised and dangerous going forward.

It prompted Tigers coach Ong Kim Swee to send in winger Wan Zack Haikal Wan Nor for Wan Zaharulnizam Wan Zakaria in a bid to penetrate the T-Team defence.

The change almost paid off immediately when in the 28th minute Wan Zack's effort was just inches wide off the post and with the visitors growing in confidence, they nearly forced T-Team's Azizi Matt Rose to score an own goal in the 38th minute in his attempt to clear Irfan Fazail's cross.

Things took a turn for the worse for T-Team after the break when right-back Shazlan Alias was dismissed in the 59th minute for a second bookable offence and the Tigers capitalised on their numerical advantage to equalise through a Fandi volley seven minutes later.

After Tigers striker Izzaq Faris Ramlan had a goal ruled out for offside in the 79th minute, his replacement Syahrul Azwari pounced on a loose ball four minutes later to strike from close range.

Zairo received his marching orders in the 89th minute to leave his side down to nine men before Syahrul Azwari added another for 3-1 in stoppage time.
