Selain membawa pulang trofi AFF, Malaysia meraih wang tunai sebanyak A$$100,000 sementara Indonesia mendapat A$$ 50,000.

– Utusan

Thousands attend Cohen’s funeral in Tel Aviv

TEL AVIV, Dec 30 — Thousands of mourners joined former Liverpool and Israel defender Avi Cohen's funeral procession yesterday after he died from injuries sustained in a road accident in Tel Aviv last week.

Cohen, who was 54, was thrown from his motorcycle after a collision with a car on December 20. Doctors declared him brain dead on Tuesday. He was kept on a respirator and suffered cardiac arrest early on Wednesday, hospital officials said.

Hundreds filed past Cohen's coffin during a memorial ceremony at the National Stadium in Tel Aviv, the scene of some of his most memorable moments with his boyhood club, Maccabi Tel Aviv.

"It was a big, big shock for us that Avi passed away ... for the family, for the friends and of course for the nation because Avi was the captain of the national team and he was a hero," said the former Israel goalkeeper Bonnie Ginsburg, who, like Cohen, played at Glasgow Rangers.

Ginsburg and other Maccabi Tel Aviv and Israel colleagues carried Cohen's body to its final resting place at a cemetery north of Tel Aviv, where thousands of tearful mourners witnessed the burial.

Cohen became the first Israeli to play in the English top flight when he signed with Liverpool in 1979. He played with the Anfield club for more than two seasons. He made 64 appearances for Israel, 33 as captain.

Liverpool said on their website that players and fans would pay tribute to Cohen by taking part in a "period of applause" before Wednesday night's English Premier League match at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Romantic Leonardo says Inter job is ‘biggest challenge’

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 07:06 PM PST

MILAN, Dec 30 — New Inter Milan coach Leonardo, the former AC Milan boss who joined the European champions last week after Rafael Benitez's dismissal, said the job was "a dream" after being welcomed like a rock star yesterday.

"I'm a romantic," Leonardo told his first news conference at Inter's training ground having arrived to wild applause.

"I wasn't looking for work, I was looking for a dream and this is the biggest challenge there is."

The Brazilian left Milan in May after his only season in management following a series of disagreements with owner Silvio Berlusconi.

He has returned to Serie A with Milan's biggest rivals having replaced Benitez but said his acceptance of the role was not the start of a vendetta against the Rossoneri.

"I thank Milan for 13 years together and I will never forget them but now I start a new adventure. I am a free man."

The 41-year-old World Cup winner was a player for Milan before becoming a scout, technical director and coach, making his switch to their bitter rivals all the more surprising.

However, the clubs have often swapped personnel over the years and league leaders Milan have stayed largely quiet on the issue given their hopes of silverware this term rely on former Inter striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Inter are bidding for a sixth straight Serie A title but lie seventh at the mid-season break following an injury crisis and loss of confidence under Benitez.

"I still believe in the scudetto. I know 13 points is a lot but the championship still has a long way to run," added Leonardo, whose first game in charge is the January 6 clash with Napoli at the familiar San Siro.

Inter president Massimo Moratti is prepared for flak from Inter fans if his appointment of a former Milan coach, who only guided the Rossoneri to third last term, backfires.

"I am very happy about this appointment, I have always rated him," Moratti said of a man who speaks five languages.

"Now let him work without pressure but with all the ambition that we must have as champions of the world. He bears a heavy weight on his shoulders, as I do, for the decision the club have taken." — Reuters

Fergie unhappy with referee as United dropped points

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 08:48 PM PST

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 12:19:00

Football

DEVILS' BANE: Van der Sar (right) unable to stop Bowyer from scoring an equalising goal against Man United this morning

LONDON: Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson bemoaned the referee's failure to spot a foul by tall striker Nikola Zigic after they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Birmingham City at St Andrew's this morning.

However, the result still steered back United to top of the table which was occupied a couple of hours earlier by local rivals Manchester City who outplayed Aston Villa 4-0 at City of Manchester Stadium.

The Red Devils appeared to be heading towards only a second Premier League away win of the season when Dimitar Berbatov clinically finished off a slick move in the 58th minute.

However, Birmingham snatched a point a minute from time when midfielder Lee Bowyer pounced from close range to steer home Zigic's knock-down.

However, Ferguson felt Birmingham substitute Zigic had fouled his centreback Rio Ferdinand before using his arm to guide the ball into Bowyer's path and was disappointed referee Lee Mason did not spot the offences.

"Handball, a foul on the centreback, he went right through him," Ferguson told Sky Sports.

"If the referee can't see that, what chance have you got?

"At this level, in a game of that importance, you hope you're going to get a referee that can see that. If he can't, what chance have you got?

"I've got no complaints with my team today, they fought hard, they worked hard and had only two days' rest.

"They have run their socks off to get a result and it's hard on them."

Veteran winger Ryan Giggs and Berbatov both hit the post for United and Ferguson felt they were unfortunate not to claim all three points.

"I think it's terribly harsh. I think we outplayed them in the second half and we didn't deserve that.

"But football is a funny game. It's a tight league, it's a difficult place to come here and every team that come here have a difficult game.

"I think we deserved to win the game. We were the better team, but maybe we should have finished them off after we went 1-0 up.

"There were a number of times we counter-attacked, but we needed more care in our finishing pass and finishing shot. It was just one of those days,' said Ferguson.

...but Balotelli insists he is happy at City after Villa bashing

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 12:14:00

Football

FINISH THEM! Balotelli scores City's fourth goal of the match from a penalty kick

MANCHESTER: Controversial striker Mario Balotelli is adamant he is "very happy" at Manchester City and brushed off his lack of celebrations when he scores.

The 20-year-old Italy international or "Super Mario", scored a hattrick — his first in England — in City's 4-0 bashing of Aston Villa at City of Manchester Stadium yesterday but was muted in his celebrations of the accomplishment.

Two of Balotelli's goals were from penalties in the 8th and 55th minute. The other came in the 27th minute.

The other goal was scored by defender Joleon Lescott in the 13th minute.

The three goals took Balotelli's tally to eight in 11 appearances since his move from Inter Milan, but he insists scoring is simply part of his job.

"I am always happy, even when I don't smile," he told City's website.

"But I feel a striker has to score. It is my job. That is why I don't smile. I am still happy and I can score more."

The lack of emotion has been mooted as a reason for reported homesickness, but Balotelli has played down claims that he is unsettled at City.

"I am very happy even if the journalists in Italy say I want to go to Milan," he said.

"I am here and I am working hard in training. I want to be an important man for this team and the results are on the pitch."

Balotelli's performance provides manager Roberto Mancini with a selection dilemma ahead of Saturday's encounter with Blackpool, when skipper Carlos Tevez is expected to return after being rested for the Villa game.

Yet that squad strength is one of the factors which lead a growing number to conclude that City can win the title this season and Balotelli is one of them.

"We can win this championship," he said.

"In the New Year we can be better."

Vettel, Red Bull ensure place in F1 history

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 11:41 PM PST

MADRID (AP) - Sebastian Vettel ensured Red Bull's place in Formula One history as the sport's youngest ever champion in a season that featured one of the most competitive grids in history and Michael Schumacher's disappointing return.

The 23-year-old Vettel won the last two races of the season to overtake two-time champion Fernando Alonso for the title in Abu Dhabi.

Seven-time champion Schumacher, meanwhile, returned with Mercedes after a three-year retirement at age 41 and finished 184 points behind Vettel in ninth.

Red Bull delivered a jolt to F1 as Vettel teammate Mark Webber finished third overall to ensure the constructors' championship for the energy-drink backed team.

After only six seasons in F1 and after nearly breaking through with the title the previous season, Red Bull expects more of the same in 2011.

"We expect a new car again but we don't take anything for granted," said Webber, who finished the last four races with a fractured shoulder to end 14 points behind.

The Australian has cleared the air with Vettel after a season when the two drivers clashed on the track, a year in which four champions raced in one of the most competitive seasons in history.

With Vettel, there will now be five champions on the grid for the start of the 2011 season.

Red Bull said it will not alter its ban on team orders, although FIA has decided to allow them as long as they don't bring the sport into disrepute.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said Alonso and teammate Felipe Massa will start on equal footing.

"In a year when we did not have the best car, we managed to get to the last race still in with a great chance of winning the title after staging a really strong recovery," said Alonso, who went into the finale at Abu Dhabi with an eight-point lead but ended up four point behind Vettel in second.

"In a race like that last one, anything could happen."

Neither Lewis Hamilton nor Jenson Button managed to secure the championship for McLaren, but all teams expect the British team to be one of the title favorites despite the ban on F-ducts and adjustable rear wings, two technical advantages McLaren held over the field.

Button, who finished fifth behind Hamilton after winning his first title in 2009, expects the team to again push the boundaries of the new regulations, including the return of overtaking system KERS.

"They have so much experience in that area that I think we'll have an advantage," Button said. "We'll have an advantage on Red Bull and Ferrari I think, which is great. We'll take every advantage we possibly can."

Red Bull has no experience with KERS, while Ferrari does. Mercedes is hoping its engine compatibility with the energy recovery system gives it a chance to challenge after Schumacher's return fizzled.

Schumacher and the Silver Arrow's optimistic return quickly faded. Teammate Nico Rosberg nearly doubled Schumacher's point total, but still finished seventh.

Renault, meanwhile, showed it was making strides to move past the "crashgate" scandal of 2008. With Robert Kubica at the helm and a first Russian driver in Vitaly Petrov, the French team finished fifth. It will start 2011 as Team Renault Lotus after reaching an agreement to use the iconic team name.

The move means Malaysia Air boss Tony Fernandes may have to find a new name for his cars after he returned the Lotus name to F1 in 2010. Lotus proved to be the best of the three new teams, ahead of Virgin Racing and HRT.

Several regulation changes will greet teams in 2011 as drivers face tougher sanctions for dangerous or unsporting driving, with stewards able to exclude them from a race or suspend them for the next. F1 will also introduce a curfew to cut down on man hours. Mexican driver Sergio Lopez and Pastor Maldonado of Venezuela bring a Latin American flair to the grid in 2011.

And a street mugging in central London will not keep 80-year-old F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone away as the sport survived the season with all major sponsors intact, a successful first South Korean GP and a season free of lurid off-circuit scandals.

Roddick on the up after illness

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 11:20 PM PST

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) - American tennis star Andy Roddick says he feels fit for the first time in more than six months after winning his battle against the strength-sapping illness mononucleosis.

World No. 8 Roddick said he fought against the illness for most of last year when he failed to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the French and U.S. Opens.

He said on Wednesday he had worked hard to regain his fitness during the recent offseason and would look to next week's Brisbane Invitational tournament as a springboard into a better 2011.

"For me it's just a matter of getting right, getting healthy," Roddick said. "I battled sickness for a big part of last year and from there I just felt like I was playing catch-up.

"You train hard and you get hurt in training coming back. You don't train, you rest and you try and come back and your body is not right and it shows.

A former world No.1, Roddick's ranking dropped as low as 13 in August last year before getting back into single figures, but he now felt ready to push for the world's top five.

"It's the first time I've felt right since last May so when you are fit it takes a lot of the mental pressure off," Roddick said.

"You feel like you can play any way you want so I feel fresh and I feel enthused and ready."

Roddick beat Czech Radek Stepanek to win last year's final at Brisbane and said he was looking to the Jan. 2 to 9 tournament for a similar show of early season form as he builds up for next month's Australian Open.

"I came in last year and hadn't been playing much so this was a really good springboard into the year for me," he said.

"I like being in the same country but also I like this event. My wife enjoys coming here so let's not pretend I make any decisions."

Roddick is second seed for Brisbane, behind world No.4 Robin Soderling of Sweden.

Leo: Inter Tantangan Terhebat!

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 01:07 PM PST

MILAN - Kebanggaan bercampur kecemasan tengah dirasakan allenatore anyar Inter Milan Leonardo Araujo.

(far)

De Gea Pertahankan Jersey Atletico

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 12:30 PM PST

MADRID - Keputusan David De Gea bertahan di Atletico Madrid sudah bulat. Penjaga gawang muda Spanyol menegaskan dirinya enggan melepas jersey kebesaran Atletico dalam jangka waktu panjang.

Spekulasi menyebutkan De Gea menjadi buruan Manchester United jelang dibukanya bursa transfer musim dingin, Januari 2011, seiring penjaga gawang utama Edwin van der Sar sudah memasuki masa pensiun.

Kini Leonardo menjadi pelatih rival berat Milan, Inter.

JAKARTA – Penyerang kebangsaan, Mohd. Safee Mohd.

Firman membawa pulang wang tunai berjumlah AS$10,000 (RM30,951).

Sementara itu, selaku juara, Malaysia berjaya meraih wang tunai berjumlah AS$100,000 (RM309,510) manakala Indonesia yang menjadi naib juara menerima habuan AS$50,000 (RM154,755).

Sepanjang lapan edisi kejohanan, hanya empat pasukan pernah bergelar juara iaitu Thailand, Singapura, Vietnam dan terbaru Malaysia.

Wan Jamak puji skuad terbaik

Oleh SYED AHMAD ZULKARNAIN SYED ALI
zulkarnain.ali@kosmo.com.my.

Shafee Mohd.

Garudaku Sayang, Garudaku Malang

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 05:13 PM PST

Itu membuat down. Saya bangga kok dengan permainan timnas sepanjang AFF," ucap Tamam.

Rajagopal: Jika Penalti Firman Gol, maka...

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 04:57 PM PST

K. RAJAGOBAL does not want his players to curb their attacking instincts when defending a 3-0 lead during the AFF Suzuki Cup final second leg at the Bung Karno Stadium today.

Responding to suggestions that Malaysia will employ a defensive strategy, Rajagobal said each match has to be approached differently.

"We are here with a three-goal lead and we know Indonesia are a strong and good team. We are thinking optimistically and aim to play to the best of our ability.

"The confidence level of the players has gone up with each game we play and we are focused only on this game," said Rajagobal at the pre-match press conference at the team hotel yesterday.

Indonesia will be looking for an early goal to boost their chances of overturning the deficit and Rajagobal said his side need to maintain their defensive discipline when under pressure.

"We will play as how we should and I want the players to follow my instructions," said Rajagobal. "Of course, Indonesia will attack for the early goal but we also have good strikers to trouble them.

"If we get one goal, it will put the pressure back on Indonesia. We don't just want to defend, we want to score as well.

"We have not come here for a draw, we want to be more organised than how we played at home when we had the luxury to attack at will.

"When we lose the ball, we need to get organised. It may look defensive but we can be dangerous on the break."

Football / AFF Suzuki Cup: It's now more than just a game

THE battle lines have been drawn after Malaysia were accused of cheating their way to victory in the AFF Suzuki Cup final first leg, never mind that Indonesia were outclassed.

Malaysian football stands on the brink of making history by winning the Asean Championship crown for the first time after going on a five-match unbeaten run during which goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat only let in one goal.

But as the Indonesian media harp on a laser beam incident in Bukit Jalil on Sunday which apparently contributed to their defeat, the second leg today seems to be more about getting even than playing football.

From talk show guests to celebrities and the man on the street, none passed up a chance to spit venom at not just the Malaysian team, but at the country as well.

That, however, is beside the point as this is ultimately about football as national coach K. Rajagobal was at pains to stress to the Indonesian reporters yesterday.

"There have been a lot of accusations and I don't know if it is true or not or even who was responsible.

"Your coach (Alfred Riedl) is a professional and said Indonesia lost because the players lost their concentration after conceding the first goal through a mistake.

"This is entertainment and I hope nothing else interferes with the game because ultimately only you will lose out," said Rajagobal.

Indonesia need a big win to overturn the 3-0 first leg score and having beaten Malaysia 5-1 in the opening group match in Jakarta on Dec 1, expectations are high on a repeat scoreline.

"When we lost that game 5-1, we accepted the defeat, admitted our errors and made no excuses. I want to know why can't Indonesians do the same. This is football, there will be a winner and a loser and we must know how to accept facts. All I want to see is a good game and fair play on the field," added Rajagobal.

One factor that should work in Malaysia's favour is the absence of Indonesia's tricky winger Oktovianus Maniani who is suspended after picking up his second caution of the tournament in Bukit Jalil.

Also, history is on Malaysia's side as the team who won the first leg, have always gone on to win the trophy since the AFF tournament final became a two-leg affair in 2004-05.

The omens are looking good for Malaysia.
