Perez focused on Sauber as Ferrari future looms

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 04:14 AM PST

VALENCIA, Spain (AP): Mexican driver Sergio Perez is staying focused on his rookie Formula One season with Sauber despite a possible move to Ferrari.

Perez and Japanese teammate Kamui Kobayashi have unveiled the Swiss team's 2011 car at the Cheste Circuit in Valencia.

Perez remains part of Ferrari's young driver's academy but insists his present focus "is only Sauber. Obviously the dream is one day to drive for Ferrari ... my main job is in Sauber and Ferrari knows this very well."

Perez says the reaction from his move to F1 has been enormous in his native country, adding "the whole country has waited a long time, 30 years, since we had a Mexican in Formula One."

Perez's addition has also led to a number of Mexican sponsors for Sauber.

Sochi 2014 Olympic construction chief resigns

Posted: 31 Jan 2011 04:13 AM PST

MOSCOW (AP): The head of construction for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi has resigned, two weeks before athletes arrive for the first Olympic test events, Russian news agencies reported Monday.

The state Olimpstroy corporation said its chief, Taimuraz Bolloyev, stepped down for health reasons, the reports said. No details were given, and there was no word on a successor.

The Black Sea resort of Sochi is building virtually all Olympic venues from scratch in a multi-billion-dollar project.

Originally, $12 billion of public and private money was earmarked for Russia's first Winter Games, but that figure is thought to have spiraled.

Bolloyev's departure comes as Sochi organizers prepare to stage the first test events for the games, with lower-tier Europa Cup Alpine ski races scheduled from Feb. 15-18 and Feb. 22-26 in the Krasnaya Polyana mountains.

Bolloyev was appointed in 2009 by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, whose backing for the games was a key factor in Sochi winning the bid.

Putin mandated Bolloyev to supervise spending closely, but in November 2009 the prosecutor-general accused Olimpstroy of misusing funds, unfair tenders and unjustifiably high labor costs.

Human rights activists have accused Sochi organizers of badly mistreating construction workers and said some went for long periods without pay.

In previous jobs, Bolloyev helped turn the St. Petersburg-based Baltika Breweries into one of Europe's largest and ran an apparel company that supplied uniforms to airlines and train operators.
