THE profligacy of Sabah's strikers has coach Gary Phillips gravely concerned after failing to register a single goal in their opening two Super League matches.

Sabah's trip to the Peninsular yielded only one point from a 0-0 draw with Terengganu on Saturday when they were on the back foot for most of the game, while Tuesday's visit to Cheras ended in a 1-0 defeat to Kuala Lumpur.

Phillips said Sabah should have returned home with all three points from the KLFA Stadium after Farid Ideris, Zainizam Marjan and Shahrul Azhar Ture squandered several clear cut chances while newly acquired striker Stanley Bernard Samuel barely had a sniff at goal against his former team.

Yong Kuong Yong's 54th minute strike separated the two teams but there was a hint of controversy in the build-up to the goal with Sabah players protesting Ahmad Hazwan Bakri's cross had carried over the line before reaching Kuong Yong.

"They (KL) had one shot at goal and scored after a lapse in concentration on our part while we had at least three clear cut chances. I'm disappointed we did not score," said Phillips, who led Sabah back to the Super League after an absence of five years by finishing as Premier League runners-up last season.

"The players did not play to instructions and perhaps the midfielders found it too demanding. KL were not a team we feared and because they like to play the ball long, we had to chase quite a bit.

"Of course it's still early days yet. The strikers just need to get some confidence in front of goal. It's a tough competition, the pressure is on now that we are in the Super League and we did not keep our composure."

Phillips is hoping his team will start firing on all cylinders when they host Kedah in Likas on Feb 12 as they look to finish in the top eight.

"I know it's a cliche but we'll take it one game at a time," said Phillips. "We defended well today (yesterday) and also against Terengganu, who were doing most of the attacking.

"I'm happy with the defensive effort but disappointed with individual performances. But there are a lot of positives to take away and if we work hard I think we can finish in a respectable position."

Hafiz is expected to be absent as he will be playing in the Indonesian Professional League.

Hafiz is expected to be absent as he will be playing in the Indonesian Professional League.

LEE Chong Wei is the raging hot favourite earn his ninth consecutive National Grand Prix Finals title, but unfortunately Hafiz Hashim is almost certain to withdraw from the Feb 18-21 tournament in Kuala Terengganu.

Chong Wei, unbeaten on the local circuit since 2003 and has won eight straight national crowns, has previously stated that he will want to make it a perfect 10 on the local scene before stepping aside to allow younger players to taste success.

This means the World No 1 is likely to play again next year and, after 2012, the tournament will once again become a level playing field where the younger players can expect to make a breakthrough.

Hafiz is expected to be an absentee as he will be playing in the Indonesian Professional League scheduled for Feb 19-27.

The tournament was originally scheduled for Feb 16-19 which would have allowed Hafiz to play in Terengganu but now he makes way for back-up player Kuan Kam Chung, the first reserve, to step in.

The other shuttlers who have qualified are Chan Kwong Beng, Goh Soon Huat, Liew Daren, Lim Fang Yang, Chong Wei Feng, Arif Latif, Tan Chun Seang, Syawal Ismail, Zulfadli Zulkifli and Mohamed Hashim.

Loh Wei Sheng, Woon Kok Hong, Tan Aik Quan and Soong Joo Ven, all from the Division Two, will join the seniors in the men's singles.

Meanwhile, the men's doubles will have new champions as veteran pair Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, who won the title in Johor Baru last year, failed to qualify while top national doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong didn't see action in the two qualifying legs, the Kedah Open and Perak Open, last year and were subsequently ruled out.

Senior pair Fairuzizuan Tazari-Ong Soon Hock, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong and Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang will be involved in a three-way battle for the title.

Boon Heong qualified for the event with his former partner Hoon Thien How and they could turn out to be the surprise package.

Boon Heong could also spring a surprise in the mixed doubles where has has made the cut with Chin Eei Hui.
