Badminton: Boonsak next for Chong Wei Posted: 07 Jan 2011 04:01 PM PST Lee Chong Wei returns a shot to Peter Gade Christensen in their men's singles match in the group stage of the World Super Series Masters Finals at the Hsinchuang Stadium in Taipei yesterday. — Reuters picture Chong Wei hardly broke sweat in his 21-14, 21-12 win over veteran Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark to finish top in Group A. The victory will pit him against Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana, who suffered a 21-11, 21-17 defeat to Chen Long of China in Group B, in the last four today.
National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky said Kien Keat-Boon Heong competed in Taipei only because they qualified for the event. "Kien Keat-Boon Hong were not well prepared for the event but since they had qualified, they decided to play. After the first two matches, we felt that it was better to concede a walkover to Cai Yun-Hai Feng as they are not in the shape to challenge them," said Rexy.
"They will be defending their title in the Malaysia Open and being the first Super Series event, they must utilise the next 10 days to be ready." Cai Yun-Haifeng will meet Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark while Chai Biao-Zhang Nan will meet Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae of South Korea in the semi-finals today.

Karate: Arivalagan considering demotion Posted: 07 Jan 2011 03:59 PM PST Arivalagan considering demotion According to a source close to the coach, Arivalagan may be willing to forsake personal pride and accept the demotion and train the juniors for the sake of the sport and country. "His main concern was that if he refused, there was a possibility that the national karate exponents who had earlier expressed dissatisfaction and had threatened to walk out of the national team, would do so.
However, everything depends on NSC's decision on Jan 25, after discussions with the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf). The source added that since Arivalagan had formed a very close relationship with his charges and had drafted a number of programmes to mount a serious challenge for gold medals in Indonesia, he was hurt when Makaf decided to terminate his services when his contract expired on Dec 31.
Makaf has engaged the services of Iran national coach Vahid Kajeh Hosseini, 48, to replace Arivalagan. The decision caused a major stir, leading the exponents to threaten a walkout. Makaf president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam then said Arivalagan would be offered to take charge of the juniors while the Iranian would handle the elite team. -- Bernama |
