LEE Chong Wei marched confidently into the semi-finals from an unbeaten group stage but ill-prepared men's doubles Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong ended their misery in the World Super Series Masters Finals after conceding a walkover to Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng of China in Taipei yesterday.

Chong Wei hardly broke sweat in his 21-14, 21-12 win over veteran Peter Gade Christensen of Denmark to finish top in Group A.

The victory will pit him against Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana, who suffered a 21-11, 21-17 defeat to Chen Long of China in Group B, in the last four today.

Kien Keat-Boon Heong were beaten by South Koreans Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong and China's Chai Biao-Zhang Nan in earlier group matches.

National doubles coach Rexy Mainaky said Kien Keat-Boon Heong competed in Taipei only because they qualified for the event.

"Kien Keat-Boon Hong were not well prepared for the event but since they had qualified, they decided to play. After the first two matches, we felt that it was better to concede a walkover to Cai Yun-Hai Feng as they are not in the shape to challenge them," said Rexy.

"They will return home tomorrow (today) so that they can focus on preparing for the Malaysia Open.

"They will be defending their title in the Malaysia Open and being the first Super Series event, they must utilise the next 10 days to be ready."

Cai Yun-Haifeng will meet Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen of Denmark while Chai Biao-Zhang Nan will meet Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae of South Korea in the semi-finals today.

RESULTS -- Men's Singles Group A: Lee Chong Wei (Mas) bt Peter Gade Christensen (Den) 21-14, 21-12; Jan Jorgensen (Den) bt Nguyen Tien Minh (Vie) 21-18, 21-15.

Group B: Chen Long (Chn) bt Boonsak Ponsana (Tha) 21-11, 21-17; Du Pengyu (Chn) w.o. Taufik Hidayat (Ina).

Doubles Group A: Chai Biao-Zhang Nan (Chn) bt Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong (Kor) 21-19, 15-21, 21-18; Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng (Chn) w.o. Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong.

Group B: Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae (Kor) bt Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen (Den) 21-18, 21-15; Fang Chieh Min-Lee Sheng Mu (Tai) w.o. Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan (Ina).

Arivalagan considering demotion

Arivalagan considering demotion

NATIONAL karate coach P. Arivalagan may decide to coach the junior squad if the National Sports Council (NSC) decides to engage the services of an Iranian coach.

According to a source close to the coach, Arivalagan may be willing to forsake personal pride and accept the demotion and train the juniors for the sake of the sport and country.

"His main concern was that if he refused, there was a possibility that the national karate exponents who had earlier expressed dissatisfaction and had threatened to walk out of the national team, would do so.

"If the exponents walk out of the national squad, it will be a big blow to the preparations for this year's Sea Games and the country's medal hopes," said the cource.

However, everything depends on NSC's decision on Jan 25, after discussions with the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf).

The source added that since Arivalagan had formed a very close relationship with his charges and had drafted a number of programmes to mount a serious challenge for gold medals in Indonesia, he was hurt when Makaf decided to terminate his services when his contract expired on Dec 31.

This came after the exponents won two gold medals in the Guangzhou Asian Games.

Makaf has engaged the services of Iran national coach Vahid Kajeh Hosseini, 48, to replace Arivalagan.

The decision caused a major stir, leading the exponents to threaten a walkout. Makaf president Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam then said Arivalagan would be offered to take charge of the juniors while the Iranian would handle the elite team. -- Bernama
