Badminton / Malaysia Open: Breeze for Chong Wei Posted: 22 Jan 2011 03:51 PM PST 2011/01/23 Lee Chong Wei celebrates with a jig after easily disposing of Chen Long 21-9, 21-9 in the semi-finals yesterday. — Picture by Osman Adnan Chong Wei never gave an inch as he registered a 21-9, 21-9 win over Chen Long, the World No 4, in 39 minutes to advance to the final. Chen Long benefited from compatriot Lin Dan's withdrawal but Chong Wei's performance indicated that even the Olympic champion's presence would not have stopped him from going for a seventh title.
Chong Wei will meet Indonesia's Taufik Hidayat, who defeated compatriot Simon Santoso 21-15, 21-19, in the final today. Chong Wei's thumping win would have sent China coaches Xia Xuanze and Zhong Bo a clear message that their juniors are still not good enough to match him.
"I wasn't trying to say anything to my rivals as I was prepared to face anyone in order to reach the final. "I will meet a regular foe in the final and Taufik looks to be in better shape this time.
Taufik said Chong Wei seems to improving by the year and it is going to be a difficult task to beat him in the final. "I have been losing to him in most meetings with last year's World Championships the exception. Chong Wei's performance is getting better all the time," said the 30-year-old Taufik. Meanwhile, new combination Jonas Rasmussen-Mad Condrads Petersen of Denmark continued their giantkilling run when they defeated Japan's Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato 21-17, 22-20 in the last four. Rasmussen-Petersen will meet Guo Zhendong-Chai Biao of China, who beat Indonesians Mohammad Ahsan-Bona Septano 21-15, 21-14, today. |
Badminton / Malaysia Open: Blair goes home, still eyes London Posted: 22 Jan 2011 03:49 PM PST Robert Blair and Gabrielle White lost to Tao Jiaming-Tian Qing 21-11, 21-15 in the semi-finals yesterday. — Picture by Fariz Iswadi Ismail Blair, 29, is one of the better doubles players in Britain but the shuttler said problems cropped up when Tan Kim Her quit as there has not been a regular coach to look after the Malaysian's group since then. Kim Her returned to Malaysia as the national men's back-up coach last year.
"There have been problems with the association and since Kim Her left, we haven't had a regular coach. I started partnering Gabrielle after Imogen was injured but we only played in two tournaments," said Blair. "I decided I didn't want to play for England anymore and moved back to Scotland in June. Since then, I haven't competed in the mixed doubles in any tournament.
"Although Gabrielle (who is with the BA of England) and I are attached to different set-ups, Milton Keynes is just an hour away from Glasgow and we can have practice sessions prior to tournaments. "I hope that we can continue producing better results. We beat China and Thailand pairs in the Malaysia Open but we need to do more to qualify for the Olympics."
However, they found the going tough against another China pair, Tao Jiaming-Tian Qing in the semi-finals and lost 21-11, 21-15. |
